The Four Gates

Sacred Journeys to the Shamans and Healers of Peru

Please note that Ross Heaven is no longer connected to or involved with The Hummingbird Ayahuasca Healing Centre in Iquitos, Peru, and offers no endorsement (or otherwise) for the Centre or its work.

The owners of the Hummingbird Centre have also announced a new direction for their venue and have said that they no longer wish to run healing workshops or to host group events. For these reasons inter alia our Magical Earth ayahuasca healing journeys to Peru will be held in future (as they were in the past) in co-operation with a number of well-established shamanic healing Centres which offer authentic and effective healing delivered with integrity and honesty

THE MAGICAL EARTH AMAZON ADVENTURE return to top of page

The Magical Earth is a 12-day excursion to the Amazon Rainforest to experience ayahuasca, the legendary vine of souls, and learn from  the shamanic wisdom-keepers of the sacred forest.

The event is focussed on healing and self-exploration through a unique encounter with the magical powers of nature and the ancient rituals of the Amazonian plant shaman, providing you with an experience that others have found transformative.
The two weeks were beyond my expectations and I am recommending it to many people. How rare to have our expectations exceeded in so many ways! Thank You to Ross, the shamans, and of course the plants themselves. It was a truly life-changing two weeks in so many ways

Mike, television presenter, health and business coach, UK
I am the happiest man I know. The Jungle did wonders for me!I asked for love, I have received it. I can't see these feelings abating. I learnt so much. I am using much of what I learnt and experienced in my current life. You can't start to imagine how Peru has changed the person I am or brought out the real me. I feel extremely privileged to have met such a wonderful group of people

Heath, sales director, Australia
People ask, How was the trip? - and what do you answer? No words can do it justice. There are too many experiences to mention and none would give light on my true feeling and so I stay quiet and allow the knowledge of the journey to sit like a lovely blossoming flower that I know I just need to return to whenever I feel the strains of life. How can I say what really sits inside me or communicate my feelings from the trip... No way! The stillness I feel and the lack of rush is incredible. What we experienced was something so special and life just keeps getting better.

Linzi, company director, UK

THE CACTUS OF VISION return to top of page

A 14-day spiritual excursion to the Andes to work with San Pedro, the cactus of vision, and learn from the healers, curanderos, and wisdom-keepers of this ancient shamanic tradition.
This is an event focussed on healing and self-exploration, and a transformative encounter with the magical powers of Nature through the ancient rituals of the plant shaman. We believe it is the fullest and best value-for-money programme of its kind.
San Pedro (Trichocereus pachanoi) is one of our most ancient and magical teacher plants. Its name refers to Saint Peter, who holds the keys to Heaven, and alludes to its ability to open the gates for us into a divine world where God is found and we can come to know ourselves and our sacred purpose.
The ethnobotanist, Richard Evans Schultes, wrote of San Pedro in his book, Plants of the Gods, that it is “always in tune with the powers of animals and beings that have supernatural powers… Participants [in San Pedro ceremonies] are set free from matter and engage in flight through cosmic regions… transported across time and distance in a rapid and safe fashion”.
He quotes an Andean shaman who describes some of the effects of this plant:
First, a dreamy state… then great visions, a clearing of all the faculties… and then detachment, a type of visual force inclusive of the sixth sense, the telepathic state of transmitting oneself across time and matter, like a removal of thoughts to a distant dimension
The oldest archaeological evidence so far discovered for the use of San Pedro as a healer and sacrament is a stone carving in a temple in northern Peru, which is almost 3,500 years old (although San Pedro use is probably much older than this).
Some of the reasons that a ceremony may be held (just as always) is to cure illness of a spiritual, emotional, mental, or physical nature; to know the future; to overcome sorcery or saladera (bad luck); to ensure success in one’s ventures; to rekindle love and enthusiasm for life; to explore one’s destiny; and to experience the world as divine.
In a typical ceremony, the shaman first sets up his mesa (altar). This contains power objects and healing items called artes, which create a channel to the divine forces of the cosmos.
The shaman then prays, chants, or sings to call in the San Pedro spirits. Participants may also offer prayers. The sacrament is then taken and visionary brew is drunk.
Our ceremonies take place in the beautiful walled garden of a private dwelling in the hills above Cusco. Close by is the Temple of the Moon, a magical place of power with several caves and ancient rock carvings, which you are free to explore with our guide.
The Temple of the Moon gets its name from the way moonlight radiates into the caves. In the centre of one there is a throne carved from the rock and, beside it, steps that lead deeper into the Earth: a place of true mystery.
As well as Pedro ceremonies you also have the opportunity to work with other fascinating aspects of Andean healing, magic, and ceremony: limpia, coca divination, and the pago offerenda.

Limpia is an intriguing healing method where the shaman cleanses and rebalances the energy body so that unhelpful energies are removed and the patient is restored to power and his luck can change, bringing greater health and stability.

Coca divination uses the leaves of the coca plant (sacred in Andean medicine and culture) to produce a picture of a person’s life – and sometimes past lives. The leaves are thrown by the diviner and the patterns they create give insight into the challenges facing the client, the ‘karma’ she holds, or her best course of action for the future. Each divination is unique.

The pago is an offering to the spirits of the land and a blessing for those who take part. The shaman prepares a special packet of gifts for the Earth, which may include candies, coca, coins, sea shells, small religious statues or lithographs, and so on. This is then burned or buried in an attitude of prayerful gratitude – the intention being to thank the Earth for what is already yours. That is: no matter what you wish for, in the spiritual dimension, you already have it, and to manifest it physically, you simply need to acknowledge that, give thanks for it, and allow it into your life. We return to the Temple of the Moon to perform this ceremony and, in these beautiful and mystical surroundings, give our thanks and call for our prayers to be answered.
In addition to these programme features, regular circle meetings are held to discuss your San Pedro insights, and talks are offered by Ross and the shamans to provide you with background to Andean healing and enhance your understanding and experience of this tradition.
Our excursions also include visits to the sacred city of Machu Picchu, to Pisac and to the Temple of the Moon. One ayahuasca ceremony is also included.
